Low-emissivity glass (or low-e glass as it is commonly known) is an energy-efficient glass designed to prevent heat escaping through windows and external glass surfaces. Low-e glass has a coating which dramatically reduces heat transfer and reflects interior generated heat back into the room. There are a variety of online coated products available, giving differing energy efficiency performances.
The coating is applied by the exposure of the glass surface to vapours, which bind to the glass to form a permanent coating. With online coated glass, this process occurs while the glass is still on the float production line. They are also known as “hard” coated glasses and the coatings are an integral and indelible part of the glass surface.
